He has been involved in many influential areas of the emerging childcare strategies including the rapid growth of the brain and the importance of play to the youngest babies.

His commitment to the many theorists - where self-managed resources play an increasingly important role in brain and child development - led to the concept and design of the Shanticot.

Commercially, Tom founded Jigsaw Day Nurseries in 1990 - which grew to 3,000 children and 1,000 staff. He now has five nurseries (Child First) which aim to be examples of best practice to the market.

Tom has also worked alongside the Government and national Childcare charities, including:

• Member of the Government’s Expert Childcare Group in 1997
• Adviser to the Treasury on Sustainability in 1999
• Previously Chairman of the National out of School Alliance (now 4 Children)
• Previously Treasurer and Trustee of The Daycare Trust
